Which Embassy Do You Apply To?

This is the first question — and getting it wrong means an automatic rejection.

The rule is straightforward:

Apply to the embassy of the country where you will spend the most time

If you are spending equal time in multiple countries, apply to the embassy of the first country you will enter

For example, if you are spending 5 days in France and 3 days in Italy, apply to the French embassy. If you are entering through Germany but spending equal time in Germany and Austria, apply to the German embassy.

Documents Required

Valid Kenyan passport (at least 3 months validity beyond your return date — ideally 6 months)

Completed Schengen visa application form

Recent passport-sized photographs (Schengen format: 35mm x 45mm, white background)

Travel itinerary — flight bookings showing your entry and exit dates (note: you do not need to purchase non-refundable tickets before applying)

Proof of accommodation — hotel bookings, Airbnb reservations, or an invitation letter from a host

Travel insurance — minimum €30,000 coverage, valid across all Schengen countries

Bank statements (last 3–6 months)

Proof of employment or business — a letter from your employer on company letterhead, or business registration documents

Leave approval letter (if employed)

Proof of ties to Kenya — this is critical (see below)

Proving Your Ties to Kenya

This is where many applications fall short. The visa officer needs to be confident that you will return to Kenya after your trip. Strong ties include:

Employment — a letter from your employer confirming your position, salary, and approved leave

Business ownership — registration documents and evidence of active operations

Property — title deeds or tenancy agreements in your name

Family — dependants in Kenya (spouse, children) with supporting documents

Financial commitments — loans, mortgages, or other obligations that require your presence in Kenya

The more of these you can demonstrate, the stronger your application.

Financial Requirements

There is no fixed minimum, but as a general guide, you should demonstrate approximately €50–100 per day of your stay. The key is not just the amount — it is showing that the funds are genuinely yours and have been in your account for some time (not a sudden large deposit just before applying).

Processing Times

Schengen visa applications from Kenya typically take 10–15 business days. Some embassies take longer during peak periods (June–August, December). Apply at least 6 weeks before your travel date — earlier if possible.

Tips for a Successful Application

1Book refundable flights and accommodation — you need to show an itinerary, but you do not need to commit fully before the visa is approved

2Be consistent — your itinerary, accommodation bookings, and financial evidence should all tell the same story

3Do not overstay — a history of overstaying previous visas is a serious red flag for Schengen applications
